8. Preparing your space
Creating a space where you feel safe and comfortable will support your nervous system in finding ease and balance during the listening.
Your nervous system is constantly busy scanning you and your environment without you even noticing. That’s why it can be helpful to pause every now and then, and just take a moment to feel into how your surroundings actually feel.
This is an invitation to set up your space in a way that makes you feel relaxed and comfortable – both during your sessions and beyond.
Creating a Cozy Space for Your Nervous System
Here are a few ideas to make your space feel comfortable and supportive for your nervous system:
♢ A soft, cozy blanket to wrap around yourself
♢ A comfortable cushion to support your back
♢ A hot water bottle to keep your feet warm
♢ Lighting a candle to honor yourself (making sure it’s safely placed so you don’t accidentally touch it when moving)
♢ A room spray with a scent you love
♢ Cleansing resins or incense
♢ A hand cream you love within easy reach
♢ A bowl filled with dried beans, chestnuts, or similar, so you can reach in and feel the smooth surfaces
♢ Soft, calming lighting (perhaps turning off the overhead light and sitting by a window)
♢ Ensuring you won’t be disturbed during your session
♢ Fresh air – open the window and let some air in
♢ Taking a moment to feel if anything in the room feels off, and adjusting it if needed
Tip:
You can browse beautiful photos on Pixabay (www.pixabay.com) – landscapes, flowers, animals, or objects that resonate with you. Notice how your body and your nervous system respond to different images. If one really speaks to you, print it out and place it next to your screen.
Taking Time and Savouring is Important for Your Nervous System
Give yourself permission to make your space as comfortable and pleasant as possible, and let your senses guide you. Maybe some of the suggestions above don’t quite fit for you right now – and that’s perfectly okay. The aim is to find out what feels good and supportive for you and your nervous system at any given time, and that may keep changing.
Anything that helps your nervous system feel safe and connected is welcome! Your body knows the way.
We’ll continue to explore together what your nervous system needs. Over time, you’ll become more attuned to these impulses and able to recognize what supports your well-being at deeper levels.
